Applecourt is set within an acre of private, peaceful gardens that were once part of the grounds of the Evelyn Nursing Home that stood near to the site. Surrounded by woodland and orchards, Applecourt is the only example of a SPAN development to be situated in a wooded garden. With more than one-hundred trees in total, Applecourt is particularly fond of its thirty fruit trees, including apple, pear and plum varieties. Forming a bridge between the two blocks as well as the built and natural environment, the central courtyard features a herb garden and a majestic bramley (apple) tree which dates back to the Evelyn Nursing Home.
Under the efforts of many residents, the gardens have continued to evolve and flourish over the last sixty years. Highlights include the large herbaceous border lining the driveway, an area of wild flower meadow and the various seating areas provided for reading, quiet socialising or enjoying the sun. In spring, there is an abundance of apple blossom and flowering bulbs, accompanied by the beautiful display of white wisteria along the wall of the North Block. These are replaced in summer by scented herbs, wild flowers and colourful borders. In autumn, the fruit trees provide an abundance of produce enjoyed each year in the form of juices, pies and jams.
Applecourt’s garden provides a nature sanctuary. It is home to hundreds of squirrels and Muntjac (deer) are regular visitors. The birdlife is particularly rich with a former resident observing more than fifty species in a given year. The eastern boundary of Applecourt is Vicar’s Brook, separating Applecourt from the Empty Common Allotments. When the water is flowing steadily, the sound can be enjoyed from the garden.
Once a year residents come together to enjoy the gardens at Applecourt’s community party.
